About

Archaeological Cave Tours & Ancient Heritage
POHO run guided archaeological tours at the Pinnacle Point cave in Mossel Bay. This world-renowned site contains some of the oldest evidence of modern human behavior, dating back over 160,000 years. Visitors follow small groups led by expert guides (often archaeologists or Dr. Nilssen himself) through sea caves and clifftop pathways. The guides share stories of Stone Age tools, ochre-colored artifacts and ancient fires, bringing history alive. The tone is reverent yet engaging – many guests describe the visit as a moving experience that “awakens the human spirit” through tangible connection with early humanity.

What is the Point of Human Origins tour experience?
The tour combines a guided talk and an on-site cave walk. You’ll first learn about early humans and local prehistory (often from Dr. Nilssen) and then trek along boardwalks to ancient sea caves where real artefacts were found. It’s an educational journey through both time and terrain.

Do I need to book ahead, and how fit must I be?
Yes, bookings must be made in advance (online or by WhatsApp), especially for the full Dr. Nilssen tours. The site involves moderate hiking – e.g. 200 wooden steps down to one cave – so a basic fitness level is needed. However, there are easier options (shorter cave-only tours) if you prefer less strenuous walks.

Is there an age requirement? Can I bring children?
Tours are family-friendly. Younger children are welcome, but the content is more engaging for ages around 8 and up. The walk can be steep in places, so kids should be able to manage stairs and trails. Many families report that children loved touching ancient tools and hearing the stories.

What should I bring on the tour?
Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are recommended (the area is exposed on the cliffs). Bring water and a camera. In winter, dress warmly as it can be cool on the cliffs. As of the last updates, it’s also a good idea to bring a mask or personal precautions if required.

How close is Point of Human Origins to Mossel Bay?
It is located just outside Mossel Bay in the Pinnacle Point nature reserve, about a 15-minute drive from Mossel Bay town center. The address is on the Pinnacle Point Golf Course Road. You can park in the lot and meet your guide there.
